Om several occasions I had to sleep in the office not being able to catch the last ferry to Kowloon. The Local Registers Ordinance had just then come into force and the rubber boom was on and the work in the Registry could not have been managed without working at that rate. This would be confirmed by r. J. H. Kemp, as he was then the Registrar. His recommendation as to that is on record in the Colonial Secretariat, Hongkong. I have got my diaries in the Registry showing at what time I used to get up in the winter mornings during that period to work.
